I’ve read this book few weeks ago, and I never had the chance to review it, so here I am blogging about it, after watching the movie as well.
The book might sound similar to Harlan Cobin’s books: Crime plus thriller. But Stieg Lrasson (the author of the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, who died after finishing the series) does another take and makes the book much more social and describes a reality in Sweden. First I’m thinking to start with the plot; it’s really good, for it moves very good with no dull moment. Some events are so unexpected and totally exciting.
Now to the characters; every single character has a significant. You have to pay attention to each character that you meet, and yes there’s a lot of characters, but what’s special about them is that they are very well describes (not physically) and each plays an effective role, and its very easy to be on track with them. Some characters are so close to reality, if not all. It’s amazing how one can be connected to the characters and be sympathize or identify with some.
The reality that the book describes is very well considered; on each part of the book there are some facts written in Sweden that has to do with women as victims in the society. It shows real cases of rape and violence; Larsson being a journalist uses his knowledge in a very thoughtful way to present his ideas and his target.
As for the style, I’ve read the translated one (I don’t understand Swedish), so I have nothing to say about the language, except that the English is good. And I wonder how it would look like if it was in Swedish. And it was a bit weird to read a book in English and then watch it’s adapted movie in a complete different language.
Now finally moving to the adapted movie. I have never watched any Swedish movies so I have no idea if it follows the standards of the Swedish movies. Nor have I watched a lot of European movies. But as compared to a Hollywood
movie, I guess I can say it was good. But as compared to the book, it was really good. It’s a very well known fact that movies are not as good as the books, and this movies isn’t different, so yes, the book was way better. But as an adapted movie it was good. the characters are as I imagined them specially the female main character. The locations were the same as I imagined. And the main scenes weren’t deleted. well, of course they have cut few detailed scenes, but it’s totally comprehensible since the movie can’t be 4 hours long.
In short, I thought this book is fantastic, and even though I’ve read it a while ago, I still remember a lot of details and I still think about it. And as for the movie I would love to watch it all over again. And I don’t want to forget saying : I can’t wait to find the time to read The Girl Who Played with the Fire, which is the sequel to this book. I hope it’s as good as the 1st book of the Millennium trilogy.
